Betta Edu’s Political Return: Tinubu’s Campaign Appointment Reopens Questions Left Unanswered

In January 2024, President Bola Tinubu suspended Betta Edu as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and directed the EFCC to investigate her. A memo had emerged showing that N585.19 million meant for vulnerable Nigerians across four states had been directed into a private account. The then-Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, reportedly described the transaction as illegal.

Edu was questioned by the EFCC and released on bail. She denied wrongdoing. No conviction has followed. The case has not been publicly resolved.

Then, surprise of all surprises, she has now been named Director of Women Mobilisation in Tinubu’s 2027 APC Presidential Campaign Council.

Of course, the appointment is not illegal. It is not as if Edu has been found guilty of anything by any court, and due process demands that this be taken seriously. The APC’s Deputy National Chairman (South) has defended her inclusion, describing her as innocent and citing her grassroots networks as a campaign asset.

But the opposition has already seized on the optics. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) called the campaign council a rehabilitation centre for politicians with unresolved financial questions, and specifically flagged Edu’s inclusion alongside that of former NSITF chairperson Ngozi Olejeme, also named in the structure.

The discomfort around the appointment does not rest on assuming guilt. It rests on a different question: what signal does it send when the same president who suspended an official over allegations of public fund mismanagement then places her in a senior role in his re-election machinery, without those allegations having been publicly resolved?

Tinubu’s 2024 suspension of Edu was presented as a demonstration of accountability. Her 2026 campaign appointment, in the absence of a concluded investigation, makes that earlier gesture harder to read.

The EFCC’s findings, if they exist, have not been made public. Until they are, the appointment will continue to generate exactly the kind of question it was probably meant to move past.
