Award-Winning Filmmaker, Sculptor Urenna Amadi Expands African Storytelling Through Original Characters

Urenna Amadi, an award-winning, U.S.-based Nigerian filmmaker, sculptor, and founder and Creative Director of Afriwood Studios, is expanding African storytelling through the development of original characters and an interconnected creative universe.

A graduate of Fine and Applied Arts from Imo State University, Owerri, Amadi combines filmmaking, sculpture and visual storytelling in her approach to character creation and world-building.

Her filmmaking credits include the feature film Not a Slave, which explores exploitation, hardship and contemporary forms of slavery. In May 2019, she received an Award of Recognition in the Women Filmmakers category at the Accolade Global Film Competition, a U.S.-based international film competition, for her work on the film.

Amadi has continued to develop original African-centred stories and characters, most notably Shutter-Bird, a female superhero described in Nigerian media as Nigeria’s first live-action superhero.

The character’s civilian identity, also named Urenna Amadi, draws heavily from the filmmaker’s real-life experiences, blending personal history with fictional elements to create a distinctly Nigerian superhero narrative.

Her latest character-development project focuses on Zazuu, an original figure within the Afriwood Universe currently being developed through digital sculpture and visual design.

The character combines African-inspired details with a distinctive robotic arm, reflecting Amadi’s interest in merging cultural identity with imaginative storytelling.

As both a sculptor and filmmaker, Amadi approaches character development beyond the written page, paying close attention to physical form, costume, proportions and visual identity.

Through Afriwood Studios, she connects a Nigerian creative foundation with an expanding international presence. The company maintains its headquarters in Owerri, Imo State, while its U.S. Liaison Office is based in Newark, New Jersey.

The ongoing development of Zazuu adds another dimension to Amadi’s growing creative portfolio, linking her background in visual art with her experience as an award-winning filmmaker and reinforcing her commitment to original African storytelling.
