Germany-Nigeria Film Week 2026 to Foster Landmark Cultural, Cinematic Partnership Across Four German Cities

In a significant boost to international cultural diplomacy and film collaboration, the inaugural Germany-Nigeria Film Week 2026 has been officially announced. The 10-day cultural exchange programme will take place from 1 to 10 October 2026, spanning four major German cities—Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Hannover.

This was disclosed in a press release dated July 22 and signed by Emmanuel Eyaba, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN).

According to Eyaba, “The festival is being organised through a strategic partnership between Germany’s SONNENKIND Film e.V. and Nigeria’s Pan-African Film Development Foundation, with the aim of strengthening ties between two of the world’s most dynamic film industries.

“The initiative is expected to open new investment channels, encourage international co-productions and provide a global platform to showcase the richness of Nigerian cinema alongside Germany’s acclaimed film industry and production infrastructure.”

He explained that over the course of the festival, an impressive array of participants will converge in Germany, including filmmakers, directors, producers, studio executives, government officials, cultural ambassadors, investors, distributors and other leading creative industry professionals from Africa and Europe.

“The programme has been carefully designed to combine business opportunities with artistic engagement. “Highlights include exclusive film screenings showcasing the diversity and excellence of contemporary Nigerian and African cinema; masterclasses and panel discussions led by industry experts on international co-production, film distribution and emerging storytelling technologies; guided visits to leading German film studios and technical facilities; and dedicated business-to-business networking and pitching sessions aimed at connecting creators with investors and distribution partners.”

The cultural exchange is expected to commence on 1 October 2026 in Berlin, setting the stage in Germany’s vibrant cultural capital. Delegates will subsequently travel to Hamburg and Bremen before the festival concludes in Hannover.

The event will culminate on 10 October 2026 with a prestigious Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony in Hannover.

The closing event will further celebrate outstanding artistic achievements, honour individuals who have made exceptional contributions to cultural development, and recognise landmark collaborations between the Nigerian and German creative industries.

Describing the initiative as a milestone in bilateral creative relations, the organisers said the festival would create structured opportunities for Nigerian filmmakers to access European co-production markets while offering European audiences an immersive experience of Africa’s vibrant and rapidly evolving cinematic landscape.
