Nsikan Utuk Ubi Highlights Systems, Governance, and Long-Term Thinking as Foundations for Sustainable African Businesses
Nsikan Utuk Ubi, Founder and CEO of Nubi Consulting, a Strategy and Business Advisory firm , has called on African entrepreneurs and business leaders to prioritize systems, governance, leadership development, and long-term strategic thinking to build businesses capable of enduring across generations.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV titled How to Build a Sustainable Business in Nigeria and Africa, Ubi drew from her experience advising businesses on growth and transformation through Nubi Consulting. She also brought insights from working with founders and leadership teams navigating complex business environments across Africa.
“Growth without structure is simply chaos at scale. Sustainable businesses are built deliberately, not accidentally.” Ubi said.
During the interview, she identified several factors that commonly undermine business sustainability across Nigeria and the broader African market, including:
● Overdependence on founders
● Weak financial discipline
● Insufficient governance structures
● Failure to adapt to changing market conditions
● Short-term decision-making at the expense of long-term planning
She also highlighted practical strategies for building resilient organizations, such as strengthening cash flow management, diversifying revenue streams, investing in operational efficiency, and developing leadership capacity beyond the founder.
“The true test of a business is whether it can thrive without the founder in the room. Businesses scale when knowledge and decision-making become institutional rather than individual.” said Ubi.
Drawing on her recent visit to Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China, as part of an Executive Immersion Program, she noted that one of Alibaba’s strengths is its commitment to building systems, culture and customer value creation at scale.
“What impressed me most was not the size of the company, but the discipline behind how it was built.” Nsikan noted
She urged African entrepreneurs to adopt a long-term mindset and focus on building organizations that can endure beyond immediate growth targets.
“Long-term thinking is one of the most underrated competitive advantages in business. Founders should focus less on building businesses that grow quickly and more on building businesses that can endure.” She said.
The interview reinforces Nsikan Utuk Ubi’s growing profile as a practical voice on business growth, sustainability and long-term value creation in Africa.
