Special Foundation Calls for Greater Investment in Educational Equity
The Special Youth Leadership Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing educational equity and expanding access to quality learning opportunities for children from underserved communities at its annual Thought Leadership Summit 2026, themed “Leadership Rooted in Educational Equity.”
The convening brought together beneficiaries, partners, corporate leaders, development advocates, and distinguished national figures to spotlight the role of collective action in shaping Africa’s future.
The summit’s programme centred on a beneficiary panel of young adults and pre-teens from across 21 states who shared their experiences in their own words — offering firsthand testimony to the transformative power of sustained educational investment. The panel also included neurodivergent children from the Dynamic For Care Center for Children with Special Needs, reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunity for every child regardless of background or circumstance. The event received coverage from leading media platforms including Arise TV and Channels TV, further amplifying the national conversation on educational equity and social impact.
The summit featured a goodwill message from His Excellency, former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, alongside an opening address by Advisory Board Member Ifeoma Okpala Aina, whose address set the tone for the day’s conversations on leadership and educational equity. Keynote addresses were delivered by the Foundation’s Founder, Seyi Akinwale, and Co-Founder and Advisory Board Member, Chukwuma Nwanze, CEO/MD of Credit Direct Limited. Together, their contributions reinforced a shared conviction that educational equity must move from privilege to right if Africa’s future leadership is to be secured.
In his goodwill message, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, emphasized the urgency of educational equity, stating:
“True leadership — the kind that endures, the kind that transforms — must begin with a commitment to equity. Not equal outcomes for all, but equal opportunity. Every child, regardless of where they were born or what their family earns, deserves the chance to discover who they are and what they are capable of.”
Since its inception in 2018, the Foundation has reached over 62,623 children, with 2025 standing out as a breakthrough year in which more than 30,000 children were impacted. With a long-term vision of reaching 500,000 children by 2030, the Foundation is targeting impact for more than 90,000 children in 2026 alone. Its Inspire Scholarship Programme currently supports 619 scholars across 21 states, 80 percent of whom are orphans, 56 percent are girls, and 98 percent have received continuous support for more than five years. The Foundation’s Special Summer School programme reached over 24,500 children across 14 centres in 9 states in 2025, and will expand in 2026 to 20 centres across 14 states, with a target of impacting more than 40,000 children as part of the Foundation’s broader goal of reaching 90,000 children this year.
Speaking on the Foundation’s next phase of growth, Founder Seyi Akinwale, Non-Executive Director and social impact advocate, said:
“Our ambition is unapologetically large. In 2026, we are targeting 90,000 children. Our Summer School expands to 20 centres. Our scholarship programme grows to 1,000 scholars. These are not aspirational numbers. They are operational commitments and we will report on every one of them at next year’s summit.”
Central to that ambition is a growing ecosystem of more than 600 volunteers and partners whose support continues to expand access to education, leadership development, and opportunity for children across Nigeria. At the summit, the Foundation recognized a number of corporate and institutional partners, including Google, Macadams Baking Systems Nigeria Limited, First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited, Credit Direct Limited, Sterling One Foundation, Microsoft, Stanbic IBTC, and Sterling Bank, for their role in amplifying impact and strengthening long-term programme delivery.
The Foundation also highlighted examples of partnership in action. Through its collaboration with Google, 30 students were exposed to technology pathways through an engagement at Google HQ, while First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited and its staff were recognized for directly supporting the education of over 100 children. Stanbic IBTC and Sterling Bank were also recognised for adopting children onto the Inspire Scholarship Programme, ensuring more scholars from underserved communities receive the sustained educational support they need to thrive. These examples reflect the Foundation’s broader belief that enduring change is made possible when corporations, institutions, and individuals move beyond one-off giving to sustained co-creation and shared responsibility.
As the Foundation enters its next phase of growth, it is calling on more corporate organisations, high-net-worth individuals, and philanthropic partners to join in building sustainable solutions that expand access to quality education and unlock the leadership potential of Africa’s next generation. With a long-term vision of reaching 500,000 children by 2030, the Foundation says the task ahead will require deeper collaboration, stronger institutional backing, and a shared commitment to educational equity as a driver of nation-building.
