Kano Assembly Drops Impeachment Notice Against Gwarzo, Ganduje, Abba Groups Clash
Ahmad Sorondinki in Kano.
The Kano State House of Assembly has withdrawn its impeachment notice against former Deputy Governor of the state, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam, effectively clearing him of the corruption charges.
Shortly after its plenary session, presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore, the majority leader confirmed the withdrawal in a motion he presented on the floor of the House.
He said, in line with Order 3, Rule 6A, he decided to withdraw the motion following the voluntary resignation of the former Deputy Governor.
“We have withdrawn all charges against him, and the matter has been laid to rest. We will no longer pursue these offences because our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue? We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled,” he said.
This development comes after the Kano State House of Assembly had, on 5th March 2026, initiated impeachment proceedings against Aminu Abdulsalam over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The former deputy governor tendered his resignation in a letter dated 27th March, 2026, amid political turmoil following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to the APC, which Abdussalam vehemently refused to join.
The resignation of Gwarzo has sparked a heated power struggle within the state’s ruling party, with factions loyal to Yusuf, the former APC National chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and that of the Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin clashing over the choice of a new Deputy Governor.
Sources disclosed that the Ganduje faction was pushing for Murtala Garo, the former Commissioner for Local Government, while Abba’s faction threw its weight behind the Speaker House of Assembly, Jibrin Falgore.
Garo, Nasiru Gawuna’s Deputy Governorship running mate, was said to have enjoyed the support of Ganduje and the Presidency, while the Governor’s choice, Falgore, was a staunch member of NNPP’s Kwankwasiyya Movement led by Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
