The Lagos State Government (LASG) has again raised the quality of education in the state through the distribution of smart digital learning devices and core texts to students in public secondary schools across the state.
The move is a decisive step in transforming public education with the expansion of its Hope for Digital Education initiative, thus further strengthening the state’s position at the forefront of digital learning in Nigeria. The initiative is anchored on the third pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, which prioritises education and technology as key drivers of a 21st century economy while also aligning with the national vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Hope Agenda.
Speaking about the rollout, Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the initiative would go beyond technology.
“We are enabling access, opportunity, and a future where every child can learn, grow, and succeed,” Sanwo-Olu said.
T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus agenda focuses on human capital development and social investment. Facilitated by the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the initiative underscores a high-level commitment to modernising pedagogical frameworks across the state.
The instructional materials are recognised as essential tools for reinforcing core concepts, enhancing student comprehension, and ensuring sustained excellence in national and international examinations.
From the introduction of learning devices in 2020, to the rollout of smart devices in 2023, the programme now enters a new phase with the distribution of thousands of Hope Digital Learning Tablets to public secondary school students across Lagos State.
Powered by Liv.ing data-enabled SIMs and the Roducate platform and devices, the initiative delivers a robust suite of curriculum-aligned content, including lessons, videos, mock examinations, and life skills resources. Combined with simplified textbooks, the integrated model ensures students have continuous access to quality education that lasts a lifetime.
The results are already evident. Public secondary school students recorded an 80 per cent WAEC pass rate in 2021, representing a significant improvement, with even stronger outcomes expected as the programme continues to expand.
With over 600,000 public secondary school students set to benefit, the initiative promotes inclusive learning through secure connectivity and community engagement, rewarding students, teachers, and parents through performance-based programmes.
Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, under the leadership of the its Commissioner, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, continues to spearhead the transformation of the state’s educational landscape, by translating the executive vision of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu into measurable systemic outcomes. The ministry has successfully transitioned its programming from an emergency pandemic-era response into a structured, statewide reform initiative.
