Legal Practitioner Calls for Regulatory Sanity over Dangerous Content Trends on Social Media
Legal practitioner and Founder of EasyRead, Caleb Oboagwina, Esq, has called for urgent regulatory intervention in response to a disturbing social media trends involving the misuse of household chemical products for online content creation.
Speaking against the backdrop of a viral trend allegedly linked to promotional misinterpretations, Oboagwina stated that if Nigeria’s institutions and regulatory framework were fully operational and proactive, many content creators promoting hazardous acts under the guise of entertainment would be held accountable.
According to him, “Creativity should inspire and uplift society, not endanger lives. What we are witnessing is not innovation but a troubling normalisation of reckless behaviour capable of misleading young adults.”
He cautioned corporate brands, particularly manufacturers of chemical products such as disinfectants, not to misconstrue harmful online trends as effective advertising. He emphasised that such trends pose significant health risks, especially when impressionable youths attempt to replicate dangerous acts for attention or social media relevance.
“A disinfectant is not consumable. Any suggestion, whether direct or indirect, that encourages misuse is a public health concern. We must not sacrifice societal safety on the altar of viral engagement,” he added.
Oboagwina further stressed that responsible marketing, ethical content creation, and active regulatory oversight are essential to preserving public safety and promoting genuine creativity.
He urged regulatory agencies to take decisive action to prevent the continued spread of harmful digital trends.
