From Lagos Streets to Portugal’s Pitches: How The Future Academy Is Changing Young Lives ThroughFootball
On dusty football pitches across Ajegunle, Ikorodu, Agege and Ikeja, the rhythm of the game rarely stops.
Makeshift goalposts. Worn-out boots. Bare feet striking a ball long after sunset.
For years, this has been the reality for many young boys growing up in these parts of Lagos — where talent is abundant, but opportunity is not.
Now, for a group of under-12 players from The Future Academy, that reality is about to change.
In 2026, they will travel to Portugal to compete at the Porto International Cup, lining up against youth teams from some of Europe’s most established clubs.
For most of the boys, it will be their first time leaving Nigeria.
But more significantly, it represents something far bigger than a football tournament.
It represents possibility.
Nigeria has long been a nation of footballing talent, yet pathways for young players – particularly those from underserved communities — remain limited.
The Future Academy was created to bridge that gap, identifying promising young players and providing them with structured coaching, mentorship and life support designed to develop both the athlete and the individual.
For Abiola Fabio, Director of The Future Academy, the trip is deeply personal.
“These boys are incredibly talented, but talent alone is not enough where they come from,” he says.
“For many of them, the world has always felt very small – just their street, their school, their community.
This trip is about expanding that world. We are showing them that their dreams are valid, that they can compete globally, and that their background does not define their future.”
Fabio explains that the Academy’s work goes far beyond football.
“We are building confidence, discipline and belief. We are helping them see themselves differently.
When a child starts to believe they can achieve something bigger, it changes how they approach everything — school, life, responsibility, and their future.”
For many of the boys, the Academy has become a support system — a place where they are seen, guided and encouraged to dream beyond immediate circumstances.
When the team travels, they will carry with them the hopes of their families, their coaches, and the communities that raised them.
For The Future Academy, the trip to Portugal is not an endpoint but a milestone – proof that with the right support, talent can travel far beyond its starting point.
