A coalition of civil society organisations under the aegis of Human Rights Africa has commended the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, for what it described as an exemplary display of maturity, tolerance, and magnanimity in forgiving individuals who had previously made unwarranted attacks and false allegations against him.
In a statement jointly issued on Friday and signed by the Chairman Dr. Ahmed Ilya on behalf of the coalition said Senator Akpabio’s gesture represents a rare act of statesmanship that underscores the values of forgiveness, reconciliation, and responsible leadership.
According to the group, his decision to rise above personal insults in the interest of peace and national cohesion reflects a deep commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law.
The coalition noted that while public office holders are often subjected to intense scrutiny and criticism, responding with restraint and forgiveness as demonstrated by the Senate President helps to ease political tensions and encourages constructive engagement within the democratic space.
“At a time when the nation is grappling with political polarisation and social divisions, the Senate President’s action serves as a timely reminder of the importance of dialogue, tolerance, and unity in addressing national challenges,” the statement read.
The CSOs urged political leaders, civil society actors, and citizens to emulate the gesture by prioritising peaceful coexistence, truth, and accountability over hostility and misinformation.
The coalition reaffirmed the commitment to promoting democratic governance, civic responsibility, and national unity, while encouraging leaders to continue to act with humility, fairness, and respect for democratic principles.
