Poly Emenike at 70: Life of Purpose, Perseverance, Enduring Legacy
Kasie Abone
When Prof. Poly Emenike Odenigbo Nanka clocked 70, it was more than a birthday celebration; it was a profound moment of reflection on a life defined by resilience, learning, enterprise, philanthropy and service to humanity. The milestone marked seven decades of an extraordinary journey — from humble beginnings in Nanka, Anambra State, to global recognition as a scholar, entrepreneur, author and mentor.
Born into modest circumstances, Emenike’s early life was shaped by hardship and determination. Like many children of his generation, economic constraints interrupted his formal education. Yet, rather than diminish his dreams, adversity sharpened his resolve. He ventured into trade, built a thriving import business and laid the foundation for what would later become NEROS Pharmaceuticals Limited, one of Nigeria’s leading indigenous pharmaceutical companies.
What sets Emenike apart is not only his business success, but his rare commitment to lifelong learning. At an age when many settle into comfort, he returned to secondary school, sitting in classrooms alongside students young enough to be his children. He went on to earn degrees in Business Administration and Marketing from the University of Lagos, before crowning his academic pursuit with a PhD in International Business Management from the International School of Management, Paris. This uncommon academic renaissance would later see him appointed a Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship, inspiring students with a blend of theory and lived experience.

SEVENTY YEARS, SEVEN BOOKS
A major highlight of his 70th birthday anniversary was the launch of seven new books, an event rich in symbolism and significance. The unveiling brought his total published works to over twenty, reinforcing his place as one of Africa’s most prolific voices on entrepreneurship, mindset, leadership, self-development and socio-economic thought.
The books reflect Emenike’s lifelong philosophy: that success is intentional, character-driven and rooted in service. Drawing from personal experience, psychology, and the success principles of Napoleon Hill — whose works he is globally recognised for championing — the books stand as intellectual legacies for future generations. That the launch coincided with his 70th birthday was widely interpreted as a statement: that age is no barrier to creativity, relevance or contribution.
GLOBAL RECOGNITION AND NATIONAL HONOUR
Prof. Emenike’s influence transcends Nigeria. He remains the only non-American to have received the prestigious Napoleon Hill Foundation Gold Medal Award, a testament to his intellectual contribution and commitment to spreading success philosophy worldwide. He also serves on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and is its foremost representative in Africa.
In recognition of his contributions to national development, he was conferred with the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by the Federal Government of Nigeria. At home, his community honoured him with the revered traditional title Odenigbo Nanka, acknowledging his immense role in community development, youth empowerment and philanthropy.

A FATHER, MENTOR AND MORAL COMPASS
Beyond public accolades, Emenike’s most intimate legacy lives within his family. His late wife bore him five children, who, in a deeply moving tribute, described him as “our pillar, our guide, and our constant source of wisdom, strength and love.”
They spoke of a father whose life has been a blessing, not only to his family but to countless others touched by his generosity and counsel. According to them, “your legacy continues to shine through the values, kindness and integrity you have instilled in us. We honour the journey you’ve walked — one defined by sacrifice, resilience, faith, and a heart that has given so much to everyone around you. You have shaped our lives in more ways than words can express, and we are forever grateful for the foundation you laid in us.”

TRIBUTES FROM ACROSS CONTINENTS
From the international community came glowing words from Don Green, Executive Director and CEO of the Napoleon Hill Foundation. In his tribute, Green described Prof. Emenike as “a man of wisdom and a generous heart,” noting that his influence goes beyond books and ideas to genuine human connection.
“Through all the years of our friendship,” Green said, “your unwavering support, kindness, and generosity of spirit have left a lasting mark. From your visits with me in Wise, Virginia, to our time together at the New York Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair, every moment has been filled with warmth, laughter and shared purpose. Those times remind me not only of your deep love for books and ideas, but of the person behind them — one who values people, relationships and the power of giving back.”

A LIFE THAT TEACHES
As Emenike enters his eighth decade, his story stands as a powerful lesson in reinvention, faith and purposeful living. From trader to industrialist, student to professor, reader to prolific author, his life affirms that greatness is not defined by where one starts, but by the courage to grow, learn and give back.
At 70, Emenike is not winding down; he is reinforcing a legacy — one written not only in books and honours, but in lives touched, minds shaped and futures inspired. His journey remains a beacon for young people, entrepreneurs, scholars and all who believe that with discipline, vision and faith, it is never too late to become who you were meant to be.
