Group Holds Symposium on Men’s Mental Health
On a vibrant Monday at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, the Lagoon Palms Aviary Club of Nigeria hosted an insightful symposium focused on men’s mental health awareness.
This important event was part of the club’s end-of-year celebration and served as a platform for crucial discussions surrounding the often-overlooked mental well-being of men.
The symposium, aptly themed “Breaking Barriers: Men’s Mental Health and Awareness,” was spearheaded by the club’s president, Adegoke Caleb.
In his address to journalists, Caleb emphasized the urgency of conversations around men’s mental health, highlighting that societal norms often sideline these discussions in favor of women’s health issues. “It’s important that we talk about men’s mental state of health,” he stated, pointing out that men face a myriad of challenges that can lead to emotional turmoil, stress, and even depression.
Caleb explained that the group’s dedication to raising awareness about men’s mental health stems from a growing concern within the community, adding that the pressures men endure—from financial responsibilities to societal expectations—can create a significant burden, yet these issues frequently go unspoken.
“By hosting this symposium, the Lagoon Palms Aviary Club aims not only to spotlight these concerns but also to encourage open dialogue among men about their mental health,” he said.
The club’s Vice President, Adedeji Ajayi, echoed Caleb’s sentiments during the event, urging men to prioritize their mental health alongside their physical health. “Men go through a lot of stress trying to cater for their family,” he remarked, stressing the importance of unwinding and managing stress effectively.
Ajayi encouraged participants to embrace moments of relaxation and avoid the trap of overthinking, which can lead to detrimental effects on one’s mental stability.
A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Adefisoye who also attended the event, lauded the club for the initiative, adding that by creating a supportive environment, the club aims to foster a culture where men feel empowered to seek help and engage in meaningful conversations about their mental state.
The presence of prominent speakers and advocates at the symposium added gravitas to the discussions. They reinforced the notion that acknowledging mental health is not a sign of weakness, but rather a courageous step towards a healthier future.
As the symposium progressed, the atmosphere lightened with electrifying performances by popular artists such as 9ce, Terry Apala, Airboy Rado and others. The integration of music into the event created a space where attendees could celebrate life while also reflecting on serious issues.
The combination of heartfelt discussions and lively performances underscored the essence of the Lagoon Palms Aviary Club’s mission: to give back to the community while addressing essential topics like mental health.
Events like this not only raise awareness but also pave the way for future initiatives that prioritize mental health, ensuring that the voices of men are heard and valued. With continued efforts and commitment from community leaders and organizations, the society can collectively work towards a future where mental health is openly discussed, accepted, and prioritized.
