COAS hails Atewe for Distinguished Service for the Nation

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General W. Shaibu, has commended retired Major General Emmanuel Jebe Atewe, MFR, for his outstanding and meritorious service to Nigeria, describing him as a disciplined and professional officer who served the nation with honour.
The commendation was delivered on behalf of the COAS by Brigadier General Folu Shonibare at the funeral service of General Atewe’s late elder sister, Mrs. Comfort Atewe, held in Agbor, Delta State.
Lt General Shaibu was represented by a high-powered delegation of senior officers of the Nigerian Army, a gesture that underscored the deep respect and institutional recognition accorded to the retired general.
Speaking at the event, Brigadier General Shonibare described Major General Atewe (rtd), MFR, as a seasoned military leader, mentor and role model whose contributions have left a lasting imprint on the Nigerian Army.
“General Emmanuel Atewe served Nigeria in very big and enviable capacities across different platforms of the Nigerian Army, both within and outside the country. His leadership, discipline and strategic insight contributed immensely to the growth and professionalism of the Army,” he said.
Shonibare also revealed that the retired general played a key mentorship role in his own career.
“From my early days in the Army, General Atewe mentored me. His counsel, discipline and leadership style shaped my career. Even the Chief of Army Staff holds him in very high regard for his influence on many officers,” he added.
The Army delegation noted that many of the positions held by General Atewe during his active service remain dream postings for serving officers, describing them as major career milestones.
The occasion was also used to advise Nigerian youths to embrace discipline, hard work, perseverance and integrity.
“Young people must learn from the life of General Atewe. With vision, discipline and commitment to service, it is possible to rise to the highest levels of leadership,” Shonibare advised.
Though a solemn funeral ceremony, the event also served as a moment of honour and reflection, celebrating the legacy of service, mentorship and patriotism exemplified by Major General Emmanuel Jebe Atewe (rtd), MFR.
