The Bauchi State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has staged a peaceful protest, demanding urgent attention from the federal government over the persistent insecurity in the country.
The labour union members demonstrated from the State Secretariat and proceeded to the Government House to deliver their message for onward transmission to the President over the insecurity challenges across some states, with a view to ending the scourge.
ader of the NLC in Bauchi, Comrade Dauda Shuaibu Maidara, while speaking, said the nationwide peaceful protest against insecurity was a unanimous decision reached at the National Executive Council meeting of the union held in Lagos to embark on protests across the country.
He reiterated that the union is demanding the exposure and prosecution of perpetrators of insecurity in the nation.
According to him, “The NLC has deemed it fit to embark on a nationwide peaceful protest, demanding urgent attention to end the persistent insecurity across many states,” noting that “the development of any nation relies heavily on security, and without security there will be no meaningful development.”
He further stressed that the issue of security is the primary responsibility of any government, whether at the federal, state, or local government levels.
The chairman commended the three labour leaders for their unwavering support in the protest and discharge of their duties at their respective offices.
Responding on behalf of Governor Bala Abdukadir Mohammed, the Private Principal Secretary, Hashimu Kumbala, who received the NLC members at Government House commended them for conducting a peaceful protest.
Kumbala, the governor, expressing his concern over the insecurity situation in the country, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the security architecture of the state for the overall development of its citizens.
He assured the NLC members that he would deliver their letter to His Excellency, Governor Bala Mohammed, for onward transmission to Mr President for necessary action to end the menace.
While acknowledging the NLC members for their humility and orderly conduct during the protest, he said their call on the government to take urgent action on insecurity clearly showed that the union is not only concerned about salaries but also about the well-being and security of Nigerians. He urged the members to remain calm and committed in the discharge of their duties at their respective posts.
Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Usman Garba Danturaki, applauded the NLC for organizing a peaceful and orderly protest and urged them to maintain the tempo.
