SID Initiative Hosts 2-Day Capacity Building for Girls with Disabilities

The Sustainable Impact and Development (SID) Initiative has successfully concluded a two-day capacity building training for Adolescent Girls and Young Women with Disabilities on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Advocacy, Leadership, and Storytelling.
In a statement, it was note that the training, which was held from the 19th to 20th November, 2025, is part of the Project Equal Care, supported by the AU-EU Youth Action Lab.

The statement also noted that the project is aimed at advancing inclusive SRHR for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) with disabilities in Lagos, Nigeria.

The programme brought together 20 AGYW with disabilities across 3 Clusters, including hearing impaired, visual impaired, and physical disability, to increase their knowledge of SRHR and enhance their leadership and communication skills to engage decision-makers and institutions on issues affecting their health and rights.

The two-day training comprised sessions on key thematic areas, including an Overview of SRHR, Leadership and Public Speaking Skills, Media Engagement and Storytelling for Advocacy, and SRHR Advocacy.

Participants identified key barriers they face in accessing youth-friendly healthcare services in Lagos State, such as stigma, limited accessibility, and lack of inclusive policies, and proposed practical advocacy actions. They also learned to use digital platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) for impactful SRHR campaigns while maintaining ethical storytelling and respect for human dignity.

Speaking at the training, SID Initiative’s Program Officer, Gloria Williams, commended participants for their commitment and urged them to apply their new knowledge within their communities.

She also noted that participants will engage in a mentorship phase where each AGYW will be paired with trained female policy influencers to support their advocacy efforts and ensure participation and representation at key decision-making spaces in 2026.
The training provided a safe and inspiring space for young women to exchange ideas, challenge stereotypes, and strengthen their advocacy voices. It reaffirmed SID Initiative’s ongoing commitment to promoting inclusive policies, empowering young women, and advancing SRHR for all.

SID Initiative is a youth-led non-governmental organization committed to advancing the SRHR of adolescents and young people in both urban and rural communities across Nigeria.

Through capacity-building, digital innovation, advocacy, and comprehensive sexuality education, SID Initiative continues to amplify the voices of young changemakers and inspire bold action for gender equality and youth development.
