The JBS Elderly Care Foundation Africa has sounded an alarm over the neglect of Nigeria’s elderly population, citing widespread poverty, lack of access to healthcare and social isolation. According to Dr. Olutoyin Ajala, Founder of the JBS Gerontology Centre, the elderly in Nigeria face unprecedented challenges that necessitate collective action to restore their dignity. The foundation recently organized its second annual “Grand Walk” in Lagos, themed “Adopt a Gran”, to raise awareness and funds for underprivileged elderly individuals.

The foundation’s flagship initiative provides critical support, including food, medical supplies and routine health checks, to vulnerable seniors. To date, the foundation has served over 200,000 meals and conducted 1,000 critical healthcare checks for elderly people in the South-West and North-East regions of Nigeria. The 2025 edition of the Grand Walk aims to expand its reach, supporting more beneficiaries across Lagos and neighboring states with a monthly outreach expenditure of N5 million.

Prominent figures, including Ogun State Governor’s wife, Bamidele Abiodun, have emphasized the importance of respecting and caring for the elderly, who are considered “treasures of wisdom and heritage”. The foundation is urging Nigerians to join hands in supporting the elderly through donations or sponsorship. Dr. Ajala called on Nigerian lawmakers to enact legislation protecting seniors’ rights and welfare, citing the growing elderly population and need for comprehensive care. Otunba Abimbola Ashiru, Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, also advocated for a framework to support elder care in Nigeria.

Individuals can support the cause by registering for the event, donating or volunteering on the foundation’s official portal. Corporate sponsorships are also welcomed to amplify the impact. By working together, the foundation aims to ensure that every senior citizen experiences dignity, care and community in their golden years.
