6 Division Commences Combat Proficiency Competition
•As GOC tasks officers on protection of nation’s assets

The 6 Division Nigerian Army has officially commenced its 2025 combat proficiency competition, which process will test the physical fitness of the military officers in the face of evolving security threats in the country.
This as the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, has urged the participating officers to be committed in the competition, so as to be fit to secure the nation’s most vital asset within the South-South region of the country.
Major General Emekah who gave the advice at the opening ceremony for the competition, held at the 29 Battalion parade ground, Port Harcourt, noted the journey to combat proficiency is a challenging one, marked by rigorous training, which end encompasses both physical mentorship, and teamwork.
Represented by Brigadier General Maikarfi Ibrahim, 6 Division Training Officer, the GOC told officers that the skills they will showcase during the period of competitions are not merely recreational; but the cornerstones of your survival and the success of the missions.
He said the event holds profound significance, not only as a testament to the gallant ability of the officers but also as a critical reflection of their operational readiness and effectiveness.
Emekah further told the officers that “In the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of modern warfare, the ability to adapt and overcome difficulties in the face of new ever-evolving threats has become increasingly crucial”.
He said, “As officers of this Division, you are the guardians of our nation’s most vital asset within the South-South Region of the country, tasked with securing our national infrastructure, protection of lives and properties, through your perseverance and teamwork, you have honed your skills and prepared to face any challenges”.
He continued that proficiency in combat is not just a desirable trait, but a fundamental requirement for any soldier who seeks to excel and survives in all terrains.
To the officers, the GOC advised further, “Your mastery of water skills, obstacle crossing, marksmanship skill, navigation and endurance run will directly contribute to the operational efficiency and combat readiness of our operations.
“It is my profound belief that your performance in the following days would inspire your fellow comrades and also showcase the unmatched competence of this Division”, he added.
In his remarks, the Commander, 6 Division Garrison, Brigadier General Sani Ahmed, noted that the competition is a vital opportunity to test the mental and physical fitness of the officers in the face of evolving security threats.
He commended the organising committee of the event, instructors, coaches, umpires and participants for their outstanding preparations in making the competition a reality.
Ahmed who was represented by Lt. Col. Thomas Obegu, Deputy Director Works, Headquarters 46 Engineering Brigade, expressed the expectation that the participants will embody good sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play, adding that “This competition goes beyond winning; it is about fostering esprit de corps and preparedness to face any adversary”.
THISDAY observed that participants drawn from the 2 Brigade, 16 Brigade, 63 Brigade and 6 Division Garrison will be competing in fitness race, map reading, combat swimming, skill at arms/shooting and obstacle crossing.
