Sonnex Charges NESREA on Strengthened Regulatory Framework to Tackle Plastic Waste
Sonnex packaging Nigeria (Sara Rpet) Nigeria has engaged with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on ways of strengthening plastic regulation, enforce the extended producer responsibility, promote PET recycling investment, drive industry leadership, and enhance collaborative regulatory framework development with the private sector during a courtesy visit to the Sonnex Rpet facility in Ikorodu, Lagos.
In a statement, it was noted that the engagement showcased Sonnex Packaging Nigeria’s (Sara Rpet) commitments to national development.
According to the Director, Business Development, Mr. Anil Mohinani, “Sara Rpet Nigeria views regulatory engagement as partnership for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to advance both environmental protection and sustainable business development. The investment in PET recycling, quality assurance and compliance framework and data tracking capabilities support NESREA’s oversight objectives while demonstrating industry best practices.”
The statement further explained that Sara Rpet Nigeria’s presentation emphasized the company’s advanced recycling infrastructure, quality assurance and collaborative approach to regulatory framework development, while adding that these capabilities position the facility as a benchmark for regulatory compliance excellence within Nigeria’s waste management sector.
In his remarks, the Director General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, noted that: “The Nigerian government prioritizes circular economy, it falls under the Presidential priorities for the Federal Ministry of Environment. The National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations soon to be gazetted is one of the efforts to strengthen the legal framework for circular economy implementation in Nigeria.”
