Nouvelle Perspective International Commends Peaceful Conduct of Anambra Senatorial Bye-Election
The Anambra Senatorial bye-election, conducted to fill the vacancy created by the demise of the former senator, has been widely described as one of the most peaceful and credible electoral exercises in recent times. The election, which many had initially feared might be marred by tension, turned out to be remarkably orderly, with voters demonstrating patience and a firm commitment to the democratic process. Observers, political stakeholders, and civil society groups agreed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies worked effectively to deliver a credible outcome that has further strengthened confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Among the international observer missions accredited for the exercise was Nouvelle Perspective International, a United Nations-accredited election monitoring organization. Its National Coordinator, Hon. Ambassador Jim Okolo Chimezie, led a delegation of observers to different polling stations across Anambra, where they engaged with voters, electoral officials, and community leaders to monitor compliance with international standards and ensure transparency in the process.
In his post-election remarks, Ambassador Okolo commended the resilience of the Anambra electorate and praised the professionalism displayed by INEC staff. He noted that the cooperation of security agencies in maintaining a safe atmosphere was crucial in encouraging voter turnout and preventing incidents of violence or intimidation. According to him, the exercise was a demonstration that peaceful and credible bye-elections are achievable in Nigeria when institutions work together and political actors put the interests of the people above personal ambition.
Nouvelle Perspective International has established itself as a respected global player in election observation, with missions spanning across continents. Under Ambassador Okolo’s leadership, the organization monitored the 2024 United States Presidential Election, democratic exercises in Tunisia and Burundi, the Presidential Elections of Senegal and Gabon held last year and this year respectively, as well as the Presidential Election in Chad conducted in December last year. Domestically, the organization has also monitored key elections including those in Edo State and other parts of Nigeria. These experiences, he emphasized, have equipped the organization with the expertise to provide credible, impartial, and professional assessments that strengthen democratic systems.
Ambassador Okolo, widely known for his contributions to democracy promotion and peacebuilding, stressed that the conduct of the Anambra bye-election should serve as a model for future polls across Nigeria. He urged political actors to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and put national unity at the forefront, reminding them that elections are meant to serve the people and not to divide them.
The peaceful outcome of the Anambra Senatorial bye-election has been hailed as a victory for both the people of Anambra and the Nigerian democratic system as a whole. Many believe it has set a new benchmark for credibility, transparency, and calm in electoral processes, reinforcing public trust and further consolidating the country’s democratic journey.
