Aturuemu: The mega hypeman who rose from uncertain beginnings to inspire many

Martins Gideon Aturuemu’s name is now firmly etched in Nigeria’s entertainment calendar, thanks to a decade of high-energy performances that have made him one of the country’s most recognisable hype personalities.

A self-made entertainer, Aturuemu ventured into hyping without the blessing of his parents, and without influential mentors to guide him. “It’s a discovery,” he told reporters. “There are some things you learn, and others that are inborn. I did not learn hyping.”

Over the past ten years, Aturuemu has built a loyal following. “I have hundreds of people who look up to me,” he said. “They reach out to me on social media, send me messages, and draw inspiration from what I do.”

Without parental support at the start, Aturuemu relied on self-motivation, determination, and discipline to fuel his career. “The first consideration is you—you have to see yourself,” he said.

He is careful to balance his work with family, leisure, and personal time, and is committed to philanthropy. “Ensure your time for work or business does not conflict with quality time with your family,” he advised.

Starting with dance performances, Aturuemu has since taken his hype skills global, performing across several European countries—and he insists he’s just getting started.

Aturuemu credits much of his success to social media, which he calls a “primary tool” for connecting with fans worldwide. His advice to upcoming artistes is direct: “Any talent that wants to be visible to a wider audience must engage the media. Social media gives you that reach.”

He warns against shortcuts to success, insisting on building a solid foundation and staying true to one’s values. “We are not working for a better yesterday,” he quipped. “We are working for a better tomorrow.”

Though many shy away from charity, Aturuemu has quietly supported and empowered people to set up businesses and offices, choosing not to publicise his philanthropy. “I do not want my support to charity to be in the media,” he said.

Despite early criticism, Aturuemu has remained grounded in his Christian faith. “I am devoted to my ministry and have been for the last 17 years. I’ve learned a lot from the church, and it has shaped my life,” he said. “You can’t take God out of the equation—God is the ultimate.”

From an uncertain start to becoming a celebrated “Voltage of Hype,” Martins Gideon Aturuemu’s journey is a testament to self-belief, hard work, and faith—values he now passes on to the next generation of talents.
