Book Launch Honours Legacy of Benue’s First Medical Doctor, Dr. Edwin Idoko Obe
In a heartfelt tribute to one of Benue State’s most revered medical pioneers, the Dr. Obe Charity Foundation has announced the launch of a motivational novel titled “The Joy of Being Hurt.” The event aims to commemorate the legacy of the late Dr. Edwin Idoko Obe and raise funds for the foundation established in his honour.
Dr. Obe, the first medical doctor from Benue State and founder of Salem Hospital Otukpo, was renowned for his philanthropic spirit and commitment to providing free medical care for those unable to pay Though he passed away in 2013, his legacy lives on through the efforts of his daughter, a Nigerian-American nurse, and her sister, a retired FCDA medical officer.
“My father believed in service to humanity above all,” said the founder of the Foundation. “This Foundation was established to carry forward his passion—to reach underserved populations with emergency medical support when primary care fails.”
The book “The Joy of Being Hurt,” published by Trilogy Christian Publishing, draws from the founder’s personal life story. It is a motivational novel suitable for readers of all ages, particularly young adults and individuals who have faced life’s setbacks. “Anyone who has failed in life in the past can benefit from the motivational quotes and messages passed through the book,” she added.
The book launch also marks a pivotal moment for the Foundation, as proceeds from sales will be channelled directly into its programs. “The launch will raise the first funds for the Foundation, as everything that has been put into the project so far came from the Foundation solely,” said the founder.
According to the organizers, storytelling plays a central role in the Foundation’s outreach efforts. “Grit, perseverance, and courage were qualities of the Late Dr. Obe. His story is quite inspiring as he was only a village boy who had nothing but became the greatest doctor his people could have in his time.”
Post-launch, the Foundation plans to host a series of readings and discussions to promote the book and deepen engagement with the public. Supporters are encouraged to help grow the initiative. “Spreading the word and joining hands with the Foundation’s team to grow it to a level that will outlive its founders would be greatly appreciated,” said the team.
