Mojisola Meranda’s speakership marks new era, says Mohammed
The convener of Women for Good Governance in Lagos State, Honourable Fatima Mohammed, has stated that the emergence of Honourable Mojisola Meranda as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly is a significant milestone for women in politics.
Honourable Mohammed made this statement during a press conference held on Thursday in Ikeja to express solidarity with the Speaker.
Speaking at the media briefing, Mohammed said: “Meranda’s emergence as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly is not only a victory for women in politics but also a testament to the evolving democratic landscape of our dear country.
For decades, women have played pivotal roles in shaping governance, policy, and community development, often working behind the scenes.”
Further elaborating, Mohammed stated: “Today, we celebrate a woman who has broken barriers, defied stereotypes, and risen to the pinnacle of legislative leadership in Lagos State. Right Honourable Meranda’s ascension to the speakership is a beacon of hope for young girls, women in politics, and every citizen who believes in the power of inclusivity, competence, and dedication to public service. Her track record speaks volumes.”
Publicly declaring their unwavering support for Honourable Mojisola Meranda, Mohammed added: “She has been a steadfast advocate for progressive policies, social welfare, and the empowerment of women and youth. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the principles of good governance, transparency, and service to the people of Lagos State. We are confident that under her leadership, the Lagos State House of Assembly will experience dynamic, people-centric legislation that will drive development and prosperity.”
She further emphasized the need for continued support: “We must all play our part to ensure a successful tenure for our Speaker. Beyond celebration, this is a call to action, a clarion call for increased female participation in governance.
“It is also a call to ensure that more competent, passionate, and visionary women take up leadership positions in government and society. Let us seize this moment to champion the cause of gender inclusivity and good governance at all levels.
“Finally, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all our members, supporters, and allies who made today’s event a reality. Holding this event in over 30 states simultaneously is truly noteworthy. Let us continue to work together in unity and purpose, knowing that our collective voice can shape a better and more inclusive Lagos State “
Similarly, the President of the Coalition of Professional Women in Politics, Engineer Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, praised Honourable Meranda’s achievement, stating: “Honourable Meranda has made history as Lagos State’s first female Speaker, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in leadership.
Her presence in office symbolizes progress for Nigerian women striving for political inclusion. We call on all women and advocates of gender equality to raise their voices in support of Meranda.
Women’s leadership must not be undermined. We must stand together to affirm that women deserve to be seen, heard, and respected in leadership.”
