Akinnayajo Babatunde discusses journey as Creative Powerhouse in Nigerian Filmmaking industry

Akinnayajo Babatunde, popularly known as Mr. Tunez Filmmaker, is making waves in Nigeria’s creative and entrepreneurial industries. In a recent interview, the multi-talented film and television director, producer, businessman, voice-over artist, song composer, career coach, editor, and actor shared insights into his inspiring journey.

Born in the 1980s as the first son in a family of five, Babatunde exhibited remarkable creativity from an early age. “I directed my first stage play at just nine years old, and for 15 years, I focused on stage drama before transitioning to film and television production,” he revealed. By the age of 17, he released his debut music album with his band, DATUTYZ, selling over a thousand copies in months. This marked the beginning of his professional journey in the entertainment industry.

Babatunde pursued professional filmmaking training in Dubai and under an American filmmaker, gaining certifications in filmmaking and management. “Learning from industry professionals like CJ Obasi and Niyi Akinmolayan sharpened my craft,” he said.

Discussing his journey into entrepreneurship, Babatunde credited his God-given gift and innate creativity. “From a young age, I organized events, composed songs, and mimicked characters. Selling our songs at supermarkets opened my eyes to the business side of creativity,” he explained. Today, he runs multiple successful businesses, driven by a passion for solving problems and creating impact.

Despite his success, Babatunde faced significant challenges, including lack of funding and mentorship. “I started without resources or guidance. I learned on the job, making costly mistakes. It was painful, but those experiences shaped me into a resilient entrepreneur and filmmaker,” he shared. His resilience has paid off, as his milestones include producing and directing blockbuster films like Midnight (2018) and ÀRÌNFESÈSÍ (2023), which gained international recognition and nominations at TINFF Canada.

Beyond filmmaking, Babatunde is also deeply committed to philanthropy. His non-profit initiative, PhotoSceneLenses Africa, has empowered over 3,000 aspiring filmmakers and actors across Africa through free training programs. “Seeing our students create award-winning films is my greatest joy,” he stated.

His leadership philosophy focuses on raising leaders and fostering societal development. “I believe in understanding the needs of those around me and helping them grow,” he said. Babatunde also emphasizes the importance of balancing work and personal life, dedicating time to God, family, and self-care.

With a legacy of excellence in filmmaking, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy, Akinnayajo Babatunde continues to inspire with his story of resilience, vision, and impact. “I celebrate all my wins, no matter how small. They each hold special significance,” he concluded.
