As the Nigerian transportation sector, faces numerous challenges that hinder its efficiency and capacity, a seasoned expert Enemosah Aliyu,
has proposed a strategy to address these challenges and transform the sector into a modern, resilient, and sustainable system.

Aliyu explained in a statement that the sector is a vital component of national development that cannot be overlooked.

The expert further explained that the transportation sector’s inefficiencies are evident in congested urban transit systems, underutilized railway networks, and delays in logistics and freight movement. He noted that these challenges compromises Nigeria’s ability to compete in global trade and commerce.

Aliyu advocates for the adoption of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that leverage real-time data analytics, IoT devices, and automation technologies to enhance traffic management, optimize logistics, and improve overall efficiency.

Drawing parallels to insights from the publication ‘Integrating Machine Learning and IoT to Revolutionize Self-Driving Cars and Enhance SCADA Automation’, it is evident that predictive systems and IoT-enabled frameworks are essential for addressing these shortcomings.
He said, “The integration of machine learning (ML) into transportation systems further amplifies their capabilities. ML algorithms can analyze traffic patterns, predict congestion hotspots, and optimize route planning.

These algorithms can also enhance vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, enabling autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles to interact seamlessly with smart traffic systems.”

Addressing workforce limitations as equally critical. the expert recommends establishing several comprehensive national training programs to equip transportation professionals with the skills needed to manage advanced technologies and systems.

He also emphasizes the adoption of green transportation technologies, such as electric buses and rail systems, which can significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in urban areas.

Aliyu also lauds the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas initiative (CNG), which is considered a cleaner and environmentally friendly option.

He said, “By implementing these recommendations, Nigeria can transform its transportation sector into a modern, resilient, and sustainable system.

This transformation, powered by the integration of machine learning, IoT, and SCADA automation, will not only support economic growth but also enhance quality of life, positioning Nigeria as a leader in transportation innovation across Africa.” He asserted.
