High Safety Standards in the Construction Industry Can Improve Workers’ Commitment, Jesutosin Obasa Explains

A construction professional, Jesutosin Obasa, has explained that maintaining high safety standards in the construction industry plays a critical role in strengthening workers’ commitment, morale, and overall productivity on project sites.

Obasa noted that safety goes far beyond meeting legal or regulatory requirements, stressing that consistent enforcement of safe systems of work directly influences how workers perceive their employers. He explained that practices such as regular risk assessments, updated method statements, adequate supervision, and proper provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) send a clear signal that workers’ wellbeing is genuinely valued.

According to him, visible safety measures including daily scaffolding inspections, proper machinery maintenance, and clear site signage help build confidence among workers. When employees feel safe on site, he said, they are less distracted by fear of accidents and are able to focus fully on delivering quality workmanship. This sense of security fosters trust between management and the workforce, often resulting in improved punctuality, loyalty, and willingness to go beyond basic responsibilities.

Obasa further highlighted that high safety standards encourage open communication and shared responsibility across construction sites. Regular toolbox talks, safety briefings, and opportunities to report near-misses allow workers to feel heard and actively involved in decision-making. This inclusive approach, he explained, nurtures a strong safety culture where workers take ownership of their environment and look out for one another.

He also pointed out that fewer accidents and injuries lead to reduced absenteeism and minimal disruption to work schedules. With experienced workers consistently present on site, teamwork improves, productivity increases, and overall morale remains high. Workers who are confident of returning home safely at the end of each day, Obasa added, are naturally more motivated and emotionally committed to their organisations.
