Guinean Coupists to Form Govt of National Unity, Residents Celebrate Conde’s Sack

The coupists in Guinea have announced that a government of national unity would be created in the country.

According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report, the coup leader, Mamady Doumbouya, said that the new government would be created following consultations and to lead the transition period.

The coupists, who seized President Alpha Conde on Sunday, have barred ministers from leaving the country and directed

high-ranking officials to hand their vehicles and travel documents over to secretariats of agencies they worked for.

Heavy gunfire was reported near the Presidential Palace on Sunday as the military seized power in the West African country. President Alpha Conde was later seen in a video sandwiched by soldiers in a vehicle.

Condé was re-elected for a controversial third term in office amid violent protests last year.
Nigerian Government has condemned the coup d’etat in Guinea

A statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sunday, Mrs. Esther Sunsuwa, read: “The Nigerian Government is saddened by the apparent coup d’état that has taken place in the Republic of Guinea today, in clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

“The Government of Nigeria strongly condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government and therefore calls on those behind this coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect all lives and property.”

Meanwhile, images of celebration have however emerged from Guinea as residents trooped to the streets after the putsch was announced.
