Adeyinka Olusanya, a 2020 graduate of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), is drawing attention for his impactful research on estuarine ecosystem management, focusing on one of Nigeria’s most vulnerable coastal regions, Ilaje in Ondo State.
His undergraduate research investigated the degradation of estuarine ecosystems in the Ilaje area due to oil pollution, overfishing, and unchecked coastal development. These ecosystems, which serve as critical habitats for numerous endangered aquatic and bird species, are under increasing threat. Olusanya’s study emphasised that without urgent intervention, many species native to these waters could face extinction.
In recognition of the originality and societal relevance of his work, Olusanya received the 2020 Research Impact Award from the School of Environmental Technology at FUTA. The award honours expert-led research that demonstrates both scientific rigour and tangible potential to improve environmental outcomes.
“Estuaries are lifelines for both biodiversity and human communities.
“In places like Ilaje, the collapse of the ecosystem doesn’t just mean the loss of species, it means the loss of livelihoods, cultural identity, and food security,” Olusanya said.
His work calls for integrated management approaches that balance ecological preservation with local economic realities. He advocates for stronger environmental policies, restoration of degraded habitats, and deeper involvement of local communities in conservation efforts.
Having completed his degree in Urban and Regional Planning at FUTA, Olusanya continues to engage in environmental research with long-term goals focused on policy-driven solutions to protect Nigeria’s vulnerable coastal environments and the region endangered species they host.
