The National Youth Council of Nigeria, the statutory apex body representing Nigerian youth at the federal level, has selected software engineer and cybersecurity professional Oghogho Timothy Obasuyi as recipient of the National Youth Icon in Digital Innovation Award for 2021, citing his contributions to Nigeria’s technology sector.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA
The National Youth Council of Nigeria is the statutory apex representative body of Nigerian youth at the national level, established under Nigerian law and operating under the oversight of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Its headquarters at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja reflects its standing as a statutory federal body.

The Digital Innovation category of the NYCN’s annual honours was created to recognize those individuals who, in the Council’s words, go beyond professional achievement to become “genuine pathfinders in Nigeria’s evolving technology landscape.”

The NYCN represents all Nigerian youth across all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. When the Council’s President and Secretary jointly signed the conferment letter delivered to Obasuyi, they were speaking, as the letter itself noted, with “the collective voice of Nigerian youth”; a voice carrying the authority of a body whose mandate is national and whose recognition extends to every geopolitical zone in the country.

WHY OBASUYI?
The Council’s letter articulated its reasons with unusual specificity, citing Obasuyi’s “extraordinary capacity to not only develop world-class software solutions but also to inspire a new generation of Nigerian technology professionals who look to your career as a model of purposeful achievement.” The Council further took note of “the breadth and depth of his technical expertise, his commitment to deploying his skills in service of Nigeria’s developmental needs, and the practical impact his work has had on institutions, organizations, and individuals across the country.”

Obasuyi’s work at GTBank produced documented outcomes. His career at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), where he served as a cybersecurity specialist, saw him lead the development of threat-monitoring systems that reduced fraud incidents by over 40 percent and strengthened compliance frameworks across GTBank’s international branches. His AI-driven cybersecurity framework; combining adaptive encryption with advanced anomaly detection; reduced cyber-intrusion risks by more than 60 percent among pilot institutions in Nigeria’s financial and healthcare sectors. These figures were documented in technical assessments submitted as part of his award nominations.

HIS BACKGROUND
Oghogho Timothy Obasuyi’s path to national recognition began in Nigeria. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the National Open University of Nigeria His professional certifications span cybersecurity, cloud security, and risk management.

He is a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN); Nigeria’s national statutory regulatory body for the engineering profession, equivalent to the Professional Engineer (PE) designation in the United States; and holds Senior Professional Membership in the Digital Innovation Assembly (DIA), an internationally affiliated professional network whose admission rate of 3 to 4 percent is more stringent than many of the world’s most selective universities.

At the time of this recognition, Obasuyi was already building a record of sustained achievement. He had received the Software Innovation Excellence Award under the Tech Trailblazer Visionary Prize Program in the same year; a pan-African recognition drawing over 1,000 nominations from across 54 African nations, with only 21 recipients annually. The NYCN recognition came in the same year as the continental Tech Trailblazer award.

His AI-driven cybersecurity framework; combining adaptive encryption with advanced anomaly detection; reduced cyber-intrusion risks by more than 60 percent among pilot institutions in Nigeria’s financial and healthcare sectors.

The NYCN’s letter closed with a request that Obasuyi would “continue building upon this foundation and remain a resource, a mentor, and a standard-bearer for the generation of innovators who will follow in your footsteps.”
