As part of measures to ensure that its financial services are fraud-proof, millions of OPay users in Nigeria have been asked to link their accounts with the National Identity Number (NIN) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN) as all non-compliant accounts would be dropped from the platform at the end of March, this year.

The Director of Card Business, OPay, Precilia Olayemi, who disclosed this yesterday during a press conference in Lagos, said OPay is in Nigeria “to bank the unbanked and to make financial services affordable.”

Olayemi, who was accompanied by the Head, Marketing and Communications, Adekunle Adeyemi, Director, Partnerships, Ikponmwosa Kolawole Odiase, and Head, Business Development and App Partnerships, Adekorede Adewole, said the security features on the verve cards and other financial services rendered by OPay cannot be compromised by fraudsters.

“No other organisation has this technology we have designed whereby cards can be linked, soft linked using technology to make payments which is why our agents are able to sell cards.”

“So there is no fear that the card agent is holding can be compromised because that card is not linked to any wallet. It’s as good as a single passage.”

“So we take technology very seriously, which is why we have been able to get the approval for the product because we have to show them the end-to-end we have put in all the security that we need to put in place.”

She said that apart from internal measures such as sending of messages  to alert unsuspecting customers of fraudulent financial practices, OPay is also collaborating with banks and other financial service providers to checkmate sharp practices in the sector.

Apart from opening of 17 new customer service engagement centres across the country to meet customers’ maximum satisfaction, Olayemi said that OPay is “moving our customer service online. We intend to create an online personal service where customers can have live chats, different activities with live customer service agents. We are working to stabilise the system.”

On the corporate social responsibility for 2024, she that OPay is focusing majorly on education especially in the renovation, provision of books and other essential items to primary, secondary and tertiary institutions across the country.
