Group Seeks Attitudinal Change among Nigerians

A non-governmental organisation (NGOs), the Attitude and Character Change Initiative (ACCHI) has called on both the federal and state governments to reinvigorate efforts at making life better for the common people as well as in eradicating all forms of social maladies.

The group also called for a change of attitude among government officials in order to ensure selflessness and altruism.

ACCHI argued that the selfish attitude of government officials at all levels had been responsible for the alleged “mind-bulging corruption and wanton crime in the country.”

“It is indeed the belief of ACCHI that with altruistic leaders, prudent management of the meagre resources and a well orientated citizens, Nigeria can and will develop faster than it can ever be imagined. Though the organisation commends some initiatives of the federal and some state governments that support and empower the poor Nigerians, yet it observes that they can do more and even better.

“All the three levels of government need to do is to initiate and implement all inclusive and highly impactful projects and programmes that touch the lives of the rich and the poor in either urban centres or the sprawling rural communities,” it added.

The group noted that as government was trying its best in the areas of infrastructural development and economic revival, it must also spend more on quality education and positive re-orientation of Nigerians.

ACCHI pointed out that the current effort of government on social mobilisation and positive citizen engagement were too low to produce result.

It said:“This is more so as the long period of disorientation and moral corruption have taken too long and a deep root in the psych of Nigerians. And this accounts for the high rate of crimes and all other forms of social maladies such as jungle justice, idleness, hooliganism and rent seeking among others. “It is sad and unacceptable that many of the government initiatives targeted at addressing the maladies are not working. It is also unfortunate that legislations aimed at combating them are weak and far behind the digital era. Though the initiatives may be good in concept but they certainly cannot produce desired result except they are fully backed up with good implementation and a carefully planned and executed social mobilization and re-engineering.”
