Ugwumba Calls for Uniform Electronic Voting System, Reinforcement of Voters Confidence

A Canada-based Professor of Medicine and Family Health, Dr. Rukevwe Ugwumba, yesterday stated that Nigeria would attain a perfect election if a uniform electronic voting  system and security checks are put in place.

Ugwumba, who is a chieftain of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Delta State, expressed concerns about the country’s staggered elections due to court’s judgments.

She said that people would have a sense of belonging and know what to plan for if the laws are changed at the National Assembly to deliver uniform voting system.

Asked why she felt sad about the elections in Delta State, he said that “we felt the judiciary did not do their job in Delta State. It is not really fair to disenfranchise the voters.

“In Kogi State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is culpable. In Delta State for instance, we cannot win four local governments with 140,000 that they claimed, and 121,000 and 261,000, it makes no sense. But we know what happened. There were blatant infractions and we did not have our security agencies show up at the right time and right place to ensure that the voters have their required results sheets were uploaded. So these are issues of security.”

Ugwumba, however, stressed the need to address the situation whereby fake results would be uploaded after voters would have taken the pains to go and vote, noting that there is a need to reinforce their confidence and make the system authentic.

She stated that “the judiciary still remains the last hope of the common man. Yes some judges have compromised more easily and others are judicious in carrying out justice.

“In Delta State, we were robbed of our elections and the judiciary system did not do us justice either. At the end of the day, we still hope that they will restore our mandate in Delta State because we won the election.”

She told Nigerians not to lose faith but continue to hold politicians accountable.

“Sometimes, it looks like a rubber stamp, but it is not always the case,” the APC chieftain stated.
