The Inspector General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun Tuesday distributed cheques totalling N27,879,659 to the wounded and families of deceased personnel in Abia State Command.

The Abia Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, gave out the various sums of money to the beneficiaries on behalf of the IG, saying that the police were “committed to taking care of our own”.

According to him, the money, which was the insurance benefits of the concerned officers, was shared to 35 beneficiaries comprising three wounded officers and 32 families of deceased officers.

He said that the police boss “is deeply saddened by the loss of these brave men (and women) who dedicated their lives to serving and protecting our communities”.

“We understand that the loss of loved one is never easy, and it is our moral duty to support and stand beside the families of these fallen heroes,” the CP said.

He stated that the IG was particularly committed to providing support for the families of deceased officers and ensuring that they are not left behind.

The CP assured the families of the deceased officers that “you are not alone and we will always be here to support you”, adding that they should continue to regard themselves as part of police family.

He said that the police would continue to keep alive memories of their fallen heroes and sustain their legacies by discharging their duties with renewed dedication.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Okey Nnaemeka, a son of one of the deceased officers, thanked the police IG and his management team for coming to their aid.

A widow, Mrs. Destiny Emmanuel, who was among the beneficiaries, told THISDAY that she lost her husband in 2016, adding that she was left to take care of her two children.

She expressed gratitude to the IG for remembering the families left behind by officers that died in active service and helping to ease their burdens.
