ASUU Sacks Executive in Ebonyi

Ebonyi State University (EBSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sacked the executive officers of the union in the state over alleged financial impropriety, tenure elongation and other acts inconsistent with their mandates.

The embattled acting Chairperson of the union, Dr. Ikechukwu Igwenyi, was sacked alongside other executive following resolutions reached after the congress of the union on September 16, 2021.

The congress also appointed Dr. Godfrey Nwambeke as the new chairman Caretaker Committee of ASUU-EBSU to conduct fresh election within six months.

Briefing journalists in Abakaliki, Nwambeke warned the public that any person having any dealing with Igwenyi in the name of the union is doing so at his or her own detriment.

He said: “The suspended acting chairman flagrantly refused to meet up with the resolutions of the congress which forced another congress of ASUU-EBSU to unanimously sack the executive and set up a caretaker committee to drive the affairs of the union and conduct fresh election to put the union in proper footing.

“Congress condemned in clear terms the tenure elongation of the office of the former acting chairperson and other executive officers in absolute violation and contravention of the constitution as clearly stated in Articles 9(iv) and 10(vi).

“Congress of ASUU-EBSU noted with dismay, embarrassment and betrayal of trust of office by the former acting chairperson for not rendering annual report of the activities of the branch as contained in the constitution thereby violating Articles 12a (IV), 12c(iv), 12e(ii) and 12f(III) of ASUU constitution.”
