2023: Nigeria Needs Competent Leader Irrespective of Tribe, Region, Says Ex-Gov Sheriff

By Adedayo Akinwale

Ahead of the 2023 elections, former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has said that Nigeria needs a competent leader that can bring succour to the country irrespective of tribe or region.

Sheriff, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated this Friday in Abuja when the Frontier of Leadership and Good Governance led by its Director General, Mr. Richard Adamu paid him a courtesy visit.

He said the whole world was in crisis, whether it is a hurricane in South America or wildfire in Australia or natural disasters from different parts of the world.

Sheriff stressed that Nigeria was also facing different challenges, saying everyday the country wakes up with a different challenge and these challenges are not only the responsibilities of the leaders but for everyone.

Sheriff stated: “Unless we all believe in ourselves as a nation, and believe all of us are equal, and believe that a good leader will emerge from any part of the country, regardless of his religion, tribe or where he comes from, we will not succeed in getting the country we dearly love.

“If the man that will bring succour to Nigeria is coming from a mountain in Ogoja, we should go and look for him, if it is in the extreme end of Adamawa, we should go and look for him. If he is coming from the end of Anambra, we should go and look for him. We must do soul-searching and look for a leader.”

Sheriff was of the opinion that the leaders of the country need everyone’s prayer because of the complex situation in the country.

According to him, “We cannot play a blame game, all of us are factors of this failed leadership. We’ve not been able to look at the leadership because we are all culturally, tribally originated.”

Sheriff added: “We must put our differences aside and look for leaders from anywhere. We must also believe that leadership is from God, nobody makes himself a leader, it is only when God chooses you to be a leader and I believe that most people always blame leaders. If you must blame any leader you must look at the followers, what have we done? To help our leaders to be strong – and we have to do soul searching.”
