The Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, and the Lagos State Governor-elect, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have expressed deep sadness over the death of about 100 school pupils in the collapse of Baden School in Lagos Island today.

The speaker, in a condolence message by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, said it was heart breaking that innocent souls perished in such a dreadful manner and called for a thorough investigation into the unfortunate incident.

“This is one too many of these building collapses that usually claim lives of innocent people. It is time for decisive actions to be taken against all found culpable in breach of building standards that end up in disasters.

“The law-enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies must step up their game and put an end to the practice of cutting corners to increase gain. While this has not being established as the cause of this incident yet, past incidents have pointed to this as a serious factor”.

“I commiserate with the families of the deceased and pray that their souls rest in peace,” Dogara said.

Sanwo-Olu, has also commiserated with the families of the victims of the collapsed three-storey building, which housed a primary school.

He expressed his sympathy to the victims’ families in a statement by his media office, describing the incident as “one tragedy too many”.

He also hailed the Lagos State Government for responding swiftly to the distress by deploying the emergency agency of the state for immediate rescue operation.

“My deep condolences go to the families of the children who lost their lives in the unfortunate building collapse that happened at Ita Faji in Lagos Island today. This is one tragedy too many, given that most of the victims are school children. I urge people to cooperate with officials working on rescue efforts. My prayers are with the affected families and the school management.

“While emergency workers are making frantic efforts to clear the rubbles and rescue more victims, I urge residents to join hands with the government in any way possible to reduce fatalities and lessen attendant trauma of the incident. I am in support of the action being taken by the government and I urge every resident to show spirit of compassion inherent in our community.”
