NPFL: Akwa Utd Consolidates Hold at the Top, Plateau Slips in Kano

Akwa United FC wednesday consolidated at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with a valuable Match-day 6 away point gained in the 1-1 draw with FC IfeanyiUbah in Nnewi.

Akwa United is now leading the pack on 13 points from six games.
Cyril Olisema put the Promise Keepers ahead as early as the 12th minutes of the game the Anambra Warriors needed to win to return to reckoning after picking just six points from initial 15 of their first five matches of the season.

However, skipper of the team, Patrick Ikeokwu, restored parity two minutes after the return from the first half break. Further efforts by the hosts to break the deadlock failed till the last whistle.

At the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, champions Plateau United were handed 2-0 defeat by Kano Pillars to slip off the top of the NPFL. The defeat was Plateau’s second of the season.

The Sai Masugida were handed the three valuable points through the brace scored by Junior Lokosa in the 21st and 27th minutes of the first half of the game. He’s now the leading goal poacher of the new season on six goals.
Plateau remains second behind Akwa United on 12 points while Pillars has leapfrogged both Lobi Stars and Wikki to the third spot of the NPFL log.

In Agege, MFM FC edged Wikki Tourists 2-1 to return to winning ways. Waheed Adebayo scored the opening goal in the sixth minute after good work by Jesse Akila.

The lead lasted only 10 minutes before Nafiu Kabuga equalised for Wikki Tourists from the spot. Akila however got the winner five minutes before the break.

In the Abia Derby played at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar yesterday, Enyimba defeated Abia Warriors 1-0. Winger Stanley Dimgba got the winner for the Aba Elephant. The victory was Enyimba’s second win of the season.
At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu this evening, one of the biggest fixtures of Match-day 6 will be decided this evening when Enugu Rangers and Rivers United go toe to toe for the three points at stake.

Rangers go into today’s game on the back of a 1-2 defeat to Nasarawa United in Lafia on Monday and will be looking to bounce back by amassing maximum points at the expense of the Port Harcourt club.

The ‘Flying Antelopes’ have won once and also lost once at home this term but they will fancy their chances against a Rivers United side that have yet to register neither points nor goals on the board, on the road this term.

The other two games of the evening are the fixtures between bottom of the table landlords Kwara United versus Lobi Stars and the Niger Tornadoes versus Heartland FC.
