Two officers of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) have been arrested over sale of expired drugs in the popular Sabon Gari drug market.

Hussaini Labaran Zakari, who is a leader of the ad-hoc committee, said the committee arrested a man at the market with cartons of expired drugs who on interrogation, said he bought the goods from a personnel of NSCDC.

“The man took us to the civil defence officer who accepted selling them to the man but said it was a KAROTA official that gave them to him to sell and upon seeing the KAROTA personnel, he admitted conniving to sell the expired drugs,” Zakari said.

He added that “they were later handed over to the Police for further investigation.”
It was further gathered that the officers were alleged to have been in the business of expired drugs worth thousands of naira.

It was also gathered that the Ad-hoc committee of Patent Medicine Sellers at Sabon Gari market effected the arrest of the two officers who are members of the state committee on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs who sold the seized expired drugs.

More so, a member of the Kano State committee on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs, Malam Tijjani Lawal, said they are aware of their arrest, noting that “those arrested may be some of the security personnel manning the gate of where the confiscated drugs are kept in the market.”

He added that “the committee was informed that already, the arrested KAROTA and civil defence personnel are at Sabon Gari market police station for further investigation.”

When contacted, Kano State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Musa Magaji Majia said he is yet to be briefed on the issue.
