An elder statesman and First Republic federal parliamentarian, Chief Bassey Okon, has died in Calabar, Cross River State. He aged 91
Okon represented Calabar Federal Constituency in the then Eastern Region, a constituency that covered the entire present-day Cross River Southern senatorial district. He had a distinguished career as an educationist, technocrat and politician.
He was the first Principal of the mission-owned Duke Town Secondary School, Calabar. He served at other times as the Vice-Principal of Kingsâ€™ College, Lagos, and Principal of the Federal Government College, Port-Harcourt.
Information released by the family in Calabar showed that the late statesman would be honoured with a parliamentary valedictory session by the Cross River State House of Assembly on September 29, 2017, while his remains would be interred on September 30 after a commendation service at the Duke Town Secondary School ground in Calabar.
