Vincent Torgah got the better of Kingsley Oparaku to redefine their rivalry by winning “The Memorare†on the West African Golf Tour (WAGT) at Arsenal Golf Club, Obinze, Owerri.
It was a hard-earned victory for the Ghanaian, who improved his victory haul on the WAGT to second since his remarkable display to win the Tour Championship in Abuja last December.
His rivalry with the Nigerian Oparaku has become legendary since the latter stole the limelight to win the WAGT in Ilara-Mokin last year and later the Port Harcourt Classic last month.
Going into the final round tying Oparaku for the lead, Torgah went on a run of four birdies in five holes on the back-nine to capture The Memorare with a 4 under par 68 in the final round. His only blotch was a bogie on Hole 12 but overall he carded six under par 282 to beat Issa Nlareb, who won the FCT Classic in February by six shots.
Nlareb from Cameroon played a 5 under 67 on the last day for the best round of the tournament.
He eagled the par 4 16th and amassed four birdies on the second nine
After leading the first three rounds, Oparaku finished third with a score of 4 over par 76, shooting 2 over par 290, while Visitor Mapwanya from Zimbabwe shot a final round 70 to finish in fourth.
Gift Willy from Air Assault Club, Port Harcourt shot a 74 to finish fifth.
The next event on the West Africa Golf Tour, B & E Match play holds from June 26-July 2 at IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja. The tournament will start with the Caddies Competition on Monday 26 June. The professional tournament begins on June 27 with a Round Robin of 64 players. The purse will be $50,000 and the winner takes $8,000.
