The Ondo Assembly Crisis

The Ondo State House of Assembly on Friday impeached its Speaker, Mrs. Jumoke Akindele, and Deputy Speaker, Hon. Fatai Olotu. In their places, Hon. Malachi Coker, representing Ilaje constituency, and Hon. Ayo Arowele, representing Owo state constituency, were elected as speaker and deputy speaker, respectively.

The impeachment was said to be a replay of a similar incident in March last year, when the two leaders of the Assembly were almost ousted, but for the intervention of Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Political stakeholders in the state should urgently wade in to restore order to the Ondo State legislature. They should intervene to stop the developing storm that may prove a bad omen for incoming Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who is set to be inaugurated on February 24.
