FG Re-opens 7 Satellite Prisons in N’ East

After six years of closure due to the activities of the Boko Haram sect, the federal government has finally granted approval for the reopening of seven prison facilities in the North-east

In a statement signed in Abuja by Mr. Francis Enobore, the Deputy Controller of Prisons (DCP) in charge of Press and Public Relations Office (PPRO), said on Thursday that the Controller-General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, has re-opened seven out of the eight satellite prisons.

The statement read: “Satellite prisons in Bauchi State closed down in 2013 in the wake of Boko Haram insurgency had to be reopened after securing approval from the of Minister of Interior, Lt. General Abdulrahman Dambazau rtd,

The satellite prisons, according to the statement, are Alkaleri, Burra, Darazo, Katagum, Shira, TafaBalewa and Toro.

However, the NPS said the Gamawa satellite prison will remain closed till it’s conducive enough to receive prisoners under safe and humane conditions.

The statement said: “Prisoners are drawn from main prisons that had borne the burden of accommodating inmates in the state while the insurgency lasted.

“The re-opening of the satellite prisons will significantly reduced congestion and the attendant management difficulties in the main prisons across the state.”
