Chairman of the committee constituted by Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo for the verification of all civil servants in the state, Aliyu Kamara said the committee is expected to screen no fewer than 19, 500 civil servants in the pay rolls of the state government.

The chairman, who also revealed that there are well over fourty thousand (40,000) civil servants in the eleven (11) Local Government Areas of the State, explained that the exercise is aimed at blocking leakages in the finances of the State Government.

He said the state government is expending very huge sums over workers salaries at the expense of people oriented projects that could be initiated and executed by the State Government.

He explained that the exercise which began yesterday is expected to last for a month even as he doubted the possibility of concluding the assignment within the time frame given by Governor Dankwambo due to the large number of the civil servants and the thoroughness of the screening.

Though Aliyu Kamara refused to reveal findings so far uncovered by the committee, he however said most of those screened had discrepancies with their dates of births and some other irregularities and assured that government will make public the findings of the committee.

Some of the civil servants who spoke to our correspondents after their verification exercise commended the State government for the exercise saying that it will bring sanity to the State Civil Service which has suffered so much due to many irregularities.
