Residents have been urged not to panic or entertain any fear regarding last week’s destruction and burning of some churches in Akwa Ibom State as the incidents were not linked to the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
During the invasion, the altar of The Apostolic Church along Information Drive, and Mount Zion Gospel Church along Aka Itiam were reportedly set ablaze while the Apostolic Church along Bassey Esau Street and Salvation Army Church had their property, including pastoral seats, musical instrument, pulpits, among others, totally destroyed.
Akwa Ibom state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mutala Mani, who spoke on the incident on Tuesday, said the burning of the churches within the Uyo metropolis does not imply that Boko Haram has invaded the state hence worshipers in the state should not to be afraid.
Although there was no report of anybody wounded or life lost as the incident reportedly occured in the night, the cause of the attack on the churches has not been established.
The state Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Ndueso Ekwere, had on Sunday condemned in strong term the attacks, describing the action as abominable and sacrilege for anyone to enter the House of God and destroy its property.
