A Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Chintua Amajor Onu, has expressed concern over disrespect for the fundamental human rights of Nigerians by security operatives in the course of carrying out their duties.
The DIG, who made the assertion in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, on Thursday while delivering a lecture on the way of preventing crime in the society during her visit to the state Police Command, Ikot Akpan Abia, also frowned upon lack of mentorship in the police.
Onu, who is the supervising DIG in charge of South-South zone, warned security operatives against abuse of the fundamental human rights of members of the public.
She tasked them to acquaint themselves with the necessary laws guiding the profession as ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
She noted that it was only in the country that somebody is arrested before investigations while the Police should have first investigated any alleged crime or petition before effecting arrest and prosecution after being convinced such crime was committed.
