Vlisco Honours Nigerian Women

In continuation of its yearly recognition of women in all spheres of life, the Dutch fabric company Vlisco honoured selected women in its Ikeja City Mall boutique recently. The event, which coincided with Mother’s Day, was to mark the International Women’s Day.
Since last year, Vlisco dedicates the Month of March to women, owing that the female gender has been core to their businesses right from inception. This year’s theme revolved round ‘Dream Come True’ where women share stories of fellow women who have inspired them.

It was against this backdrop that the Marketing Communications Manager Adaeze Alilonu kicked off the private evening after a music session with the singer Ranti.

Using the best-selling book ‘Secret Thoughts of a Successful Woman’, by Valerie Young as a guidebook, Alilonu discussed ‘The Impostor Syndrome’, which is suffered by most women who are successful in their career.
“The impostor syndrome does not allow women to appreciate themselves. Rather, they attribute their success to someone else particularly the husband.”

To be sure that her theory is accurate, the women were asked to share their experiences and almost half of them attributed their success to their spouse.

She urged them to take time out to spoil themselves; to take care of themselves because they have worked hard for it. She also encouraged them to appreciate themselves first because their success is not an illusion but a dream come true.
Alilonu in an interview with THISDAY also revealed that the fabric company is also empowering women in various capacities.

“We have different programmes that we used in empowering women. We train women with tailoring skills. Through our corporate social responsibilities, we impact women directly. We are also working on a programme that will empower fashion writers in Nigeria.”
Notable faces at the gathering include fashion designer Amos Tafiri Ejiro and the Vlisco Ambassador Dotun Akande.
