Will Oyetola Finally Open the Door to Adeleke’s Dove of Peace?
When exactly will former Governor of Osun State and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, forgive Governor Ademola Adeleke?
It is the kind of question whispered in political drawing rooms, discussed over leisurely dinners and dissected by those who understand that Nigerian politics is often as much about relationships as it is about elections.
The latest chapter in the Adeleke-Oyetola saga has, however, taken a decidedly softer turn.
After securing his second term in the August 2026 governorship election, Adeleke appeared determined to lower the political temperature. The governor has extended an olive branch to his erstwhile rival, signalling that the fierce contest should not permanently define the relationship between two men whose political destinies have become inseparably intertwined.
Then came Oyetola’s 72nd birthday.
What could ordinarily have been another routine congratulatory message suddenly acquired the trappings of a political peace offering.
Adeleke praised the former governor and incumbent minister for his contributions to the development of Osun State and Nigeria, while making a passionate case for unity among the state’s political class.
“Politics should unite rather than divide us,” he declared.
But it was his most evocative gesture that stole the show. According to Adeleke, his “beautiful gift” to Oyetola was “a dove of peace and unity.”
For those who follow the intricate choreography of Osun politics, the symbolism was hard to miss.
A dove is not merely a birthday gift. It is an invitation. A gentle proposition to move beyond yesterday’s quarrels and make room for tomorrow’s possibilities.
And perhaps Adeleke, having won the political battle, understands that victory also comes with another responsibility: the search for reconciliation.
Oyetola, meanwhile, remains the intriguing figure in this unfolding drama. Will the former governor reciprocate the gesture, or will the political wounds of the recent campaign require more time to heal?
For now, Adeleke has made his move, publicly and elegantly. The dove has taken flight, and Osun is waiting to see whether Oyetola will open the window.
