GiftedBrain Academy Hosts Third Edition of Inter-School Debate Competition in Abeokuta
GiftedBrain Academy hosted the third edition of its annual Inter-School Debate Competition, bringing together secondary school students from across Ogun State for a day of intellectual engagement, public speaking and discussions on the future of education.
The competition, which commenced in June, attracted registrations from over 40 schools. Following the various stages of the competition, 18 schools advanced to the second stage, while eight schools emerged as finalists for the grand finale, which was held live in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The competition was organised by GiftedBrain Academy in partnership with De-Perspective Youth Legacy and Empowerment Foundation (DE-YELF) and was held under the theme “Education by 2030.” The theme aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Speaking at the event, the co-founder of GiftedBrain Academy, Jesugbogo Enis, said this year’s theme was chosen as an opportunity to help students, parents and other members of the community become more aware of the issues surrounding Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and the goals set for 2030.
She noted that with the 2030 deadline drawing closer, it is important for people to understand that achieving these goals is not solely the responsibility of governments and organisations. According to her, greater awareness can help individuals recognise that their actions, no matter how small, can contribute to the progress needed to achieve the goals.
The event also featured remarks from Mrs Adeola Nelson, popularly known as Della, who spoke to the students about the importance of developing skills that would prepare them for the future. She highlighted skills including digital literacy and effective communication, encouraging the students to be intentional about the skills they acquire alongside their formal education.
The team lead at De-Perspective Youth Legacy and Empowerment Foundation (DE-YELF), Mr Olakunle Olamide, also addressed the students on making responsible choices. He admonished the students to stay focused on their education and avoid involvement in drug abuse and cultism. He also encouraged the students to remain committed to their education, stressing that education is not a scam and that there are legitimate pathways to building a successful future.
The grand finale featured eight finalist schools competing before a panel of judges. Students presented arguments on issues connected to education and the 2030 agenda, demonstrating their research, reasoning and communication abilities.
At the end of the competition, Asslaw Private School emerged as the winner. Precious Pillar School emerged as first runner-up, while Newbridge College finished as second runner-up.
The winners and participating schools were recognised at the conclusion of the event, which also provided an opportunity for students, teachers, judges and other stakeholders to interact and exchange ideas.
The third edition of the GiftedBrain Academy Inter-School Debate Competition continues the Academy’s annual effort to provide students with platforms to develop confidence, communication and critical-thinking skills while engaging with important issues affecting their education and society.
