2027: IGP Disu Assures Nigerians of Police Readiness, Cites Peaceful Ekiti, Osun Polls

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force was prepared to provide effective security for the 2027 general election, citing the peaceful conduct of the recent Ekiti and Osun governorship elections as evidence of improved police performance.

Disu spoke weekend during a press interview at a grand reception held in his honour and that of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso.

The event was organised by the St. Gregory’s College Old Boys’ Association (SGCOBA) at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of Lifetime Achievement Awards to distinguished old boys and the formal launch of the SGCOBA Endowment and Perpetual Fund.

Responding to a question on police preparedness for the 2027 elections, Disu urged Nigerians to assess the performance of the security agency during the recent Ekiti and Osun polls.

“You brought in the issue of election. I want you to look back at the Ekiti election, everybody commended the Nigerian Police,” the IGP said.

He added that the outcome of the Osun election had further demonstrated the ability of the police to prevent election-related violence.

“We just finished Osun election, everybody thought it would be violent, people would die, we surprised everybody, not one death was recorded,” Disu said.

The IGP disclosed that the police had also recently held a conference at which commanders were given instructions aimed at strengthening their preparedness for election duties.

“We just finished one of our conferences where we lectured all commanders.” he said.

Beyond the electoral issue, Disu used the occasion to reflect on the influence of his alma mater, St. Gregory’s College, on his career and personal values.

He described the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to him by the old boys’ association as one of the most significant recognitions he had received.
