An Appraisal of SDG 16 Amidst Global Unrest and Its Security Implications for the Global South
By Seyi Babaeko
The world stands at a critical moment in history. Despite unprecedented technological and economic advancement, humanity remains deeply divided by conflict and violence. From Eastern Europe to the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia, ongoing wars continue to undermine global peace and sustainable development.
Sustainable Development Goal 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, is the foundation upon which all other development goals depend. Without peace, development is impossible. Without justice and strong institutions, stability and prosperity cannot endure.
War destroys lives, communities, and futures. Its consequences extend beyond the battlefield, disrupting education, healthcare, economies, and social cohesion while delaying progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Global South bears a disproportionate share of these costs through rising food and energy prices, supply chain disruptions, inflation, declining investment, humanitarian crises, and refugee movements, despite often having no direct involvement in these conflicts.
The continued militarisation of international disputes diverts resources that could strengthen institutions, reduce poverty, improve public services, and advance sustainable development. History has shown that lasting peace is achieved through dialogue, diplomacy, and political courage rather than endless warfare.
Achieving SDG 16 requires more than political declarations. It demands a genuine commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, respect for international law, and the protection of civilians. World leaders must choose dialogue over destruction, reconciliation over retaliation, and peace over pride.
If we are serious about achieving SDG 16 by 2030, we must recognise that there can be no sustainable development without sustainable peace. The future of the Global South, and indeed the world, depends on the choices we make today.
May wisdom triumph over weapons, and may peace become humanity’s greatest legacy.
