Grace in Retreat: Low-Profile Life of Former Senator Andy Uba
There is a particular kind of quiet that only comes after noise, the stillness of a man who once filled every room he walked into and now chooses which rooms to enter at all. That is the present chapter of former Senator Andy Uba.
Uba represented Anambra South in the Senate and once held influential positions within the Presidency, building a reputation as one of Nigeria’s sharpest political strategists. His name shaped conversations in Anambra and beyond for years.
Since his unsuccessful bid for the Anambra governorship in 2021, he has largely stepped back from the public stage, showing up rarely and selectively, mostly for private engagements rather than political theatre.
His retreat was tested by legal troubles. Uba faced a N400 million alleged fraud case, accused alongside a co-defendant of promising businessman George Uboh a Managing Director position at the NDDC in exchange for the sum. He missed several court appearances, citing medical treatment abroad, prompting a judge to threaten a bench warrant for his arrest.
To resolve the matter, Uba refunded the full N400 million to the complainant. The police subsequently filed a notice of discontinuance, and on November 6, 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja formally struck out the charges.
Even that was not the end of the noise around him. In May 2026, reports circulated claiming he had been arrested over a separate N50 million fraud allegation. Uba swiftly denied it, calling the reports malicious fake news and warning of legal action against those spreading it.
Despite it all, he remains a quiet presence within the APC, consulted occasionally but no longer chasing elective office. Friends describe him as reflective, still connected, still respected in certain rooms, just no longer interested in filling every one of them.
For a man once defined by visibility, Uba’s current chapter suggests that influence does not always need an audience. Sometimes it simply needs a phone that still rings.
